TRADITIONS OF SUCCESS

Our varsity athletes are no strangers to the thrill of victory.

  • Head Coach Don Flynn, retired following the 2005 season, coached numerous professional baseball players during his tenure at Philadelphia University, including Bob File (Toronto Blue Jays/St. Louis Cardinals) and Curtis King (St. Louis Cardinals) as well as a pair of minor-league players in Shaun Babula (Baltimore Orioles/Houston Astros organization) and Alan Wawrzyniak (Anaheim Angels organization). In addition, Flynn saw five Rams players drafted in the 1990's -- File, King, Babula, Wawrzyniak and Mike Kerrigan. On Feburary 23, 2008, the University honored the members of the 200-hit club (see above photo).  Gary Krauss '88 (not present), Dave Heineman '92, Bob File '98, Evan Kiesel '05, Greg Marcin '06 and Keith Heck '07 were recognized at halftime of a men's basketball game.

  • Head men's basketball coach Herb Magee is one of the all-time winningest coaches in NCAA history with a 833-328 career record, good for a .717 winning percentage. Currently, Magee is ranked fifth all-time in NCAA coaching victories for all divisions, while topping the list for all-time Division II coaching wins.  In addition, Magee's men's basketball program holds the Division II record for consecutive wins at home with 80 straight home-court victories established in 1995.  From 2002-'06, the Rams featured consensus All-America guard Tayron Thomas, who led NCAA Division II in scoring in 2005-'06 with 29.0 ppg while setting the school's career scoring record with 2,414 points.  The 2007-08 campaign marked Magee's 41st as the head coach of the Rams, and he was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Coach of the Year as his Rams captured the regular-season championship after posting a 16-0 conference record. This was the first time in the CACC's history as an NCAA Division II conference that a men's basketball team went undefeated in league play.

  • Head Women's Basketball Coach Tom Shirley has led his Lady Rams to 16 straight postseason appearances including two straight ECAC Division II Championships in 2002 and 2003.  Last year, Shirley and his squad advanced to their sixth straight ECAC title game, falling to Dominican College in the championship game.  During his coaching career, which began at his alma mater Allentown University, Shirley has posted a career record of 537-236 for a .695 winning percentage.

  • The University's all-time leading basketball scorer, Tammy Greene (2,490 points), also became the school's first National Player of the Year in NCAA Division II in 1994.  In addition, Greene was inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.  On the men's side, senior Tayron Thomas became the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,414 career points after posting a school-record 898 points last season.  For his efforts, Thomas was a consensus first-team All-American, earning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), ECAC Division II and Basketball Times Player of the Year honors.

  • The men's soccer team holds the best league record all-time in the Philadelphia Soccer Seven and in 1999 and 2000, former Head Coach John Dunlop led the Rams to the Philadelphia Soccer Seven Championship. In addition, the Rams play in the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC), joining as a charter member in 2000 while capturing the league title in 2001.  In the 2005 season, the Rams earned a berth in the first-ever ASC Tournament.  In 2008, the men's team begins a transition to the CACC, joining the balance of the University's athletic programs in competing for NCAA Division II championships.

  • The women's volleyball team put together a record-setting 2005 season, finishing with a 30-5 overall record and taking the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular-season title with a 21-1 mark.  Sophomore outside hitter Emily Krauss set a new school record with 537 kills, earning CACC first-team All-Conference accolades.  Head Coach Mark Magarity's squad also secured the program's first-ever postseason bid, winning the 2005 ECAC Tournament as the #4 seed with Krauss taking home MVP honors.

  • The women's rowing program in just its first season (2007) captured a gold medal in the novice eight at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.  Head Coach Chris O'Brien began both mens and womens rowing programs in 2006, and the Dad Vail victory marked the initial time that a first-year program took gold-medal honors in the __ year history of the event.
