Baseball falls to No. 4 Millersville

PHILADELPHIA – Center fielder Nick Goetz (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) and shortstop David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) both recorded two hits for the Philadelphia University baseball team in an 11-1 loss to No. 4 Millersville in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon on Alumni Field.

The Marauders opened the scoring in the third inning when Dan Neff lifted a sacrifice fly to right and scored Ted Williams from third. A John Brogan sacrifice fly in the sixth doubled the Millersville lead. David Summerfield increased the visitor's advantage to 3-0 with an eighth inning base hit to left, plating Jeremy Musser.

Philadelphia (10-19) put together a out-out rally during its turn in the eighth to get a run back and close within 3-1. McTaggart got things started with a double and came around to score on a Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) single to center field. The RBI single extended Garza's hitting streak to nine, tying his season best.

Millersville (27-3) put the game away in the ninth as it sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight times. Mitch Stoltzfus had a two-run single with no outs and Tyler Orris knocked in three with a two-out double and scored twice during the inning.

The Marauders' Kyle Peterson scattered four hits over six shutout innings to record the victory. Philadelphia's Jonathan Gottschall (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) allowed one run on four hits and struck out four in the first four innings in a losing effort.

Stoltzfus and Summerfield both recorded three hits and two RBIs to lead the Millersville offense.

Philadelphia heads to Bloomsburg for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
