Garza, Wells propel baseball to Senior Day split with Post

PHILADELPHIA – Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) and Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) combined to drive in eight runs for the Philadelphia University baseball team in a 13-7 game one victory over Post on Senior Day Saturday on Alumni Field. The Eagles came back to take the nightcap 6-4 for a split of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twinbill.

In between games, the baseball program honored its four seniors: Desmond Drummond (Philadelphia, Pa./GAMP), Michael Treglia (Danbury, Conn./Danbury), Luke Floer (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem), and Garza.

GAME ONE
In the opener, Garza was 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs, and three runs scored, while Wells went 3-for-5 and brought in five runs. Garza also earned the victory as he allowed just one unearned run on three hits and struck out four over seven innings.

Philadelphia's (18-25, 9-9 CACC) came to life with five runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Garza put the Rams on the board with a two-run homer to left field and Wells tacked on two more runs with a one-out single. Matthew McGee (Forrest Hill, Md./John Carroll) was responsible for the fifth run with a ground out.

The Rams scored a single run in three straight innings on a wild pitch, Garza's second home run of the game, and a Wells single to widen the gap to 8-1 after seven.

Post (14-29, 8-12 CACC) came back with four runs in the eighth, two on an Andrew Avots single, to cut the gap 8-5. In the bottom half of the inning, Philadelphia plated five runs—two on a Michael Melendez (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) single and two on a Wells homer to right—and widen the margin to 13-5.

Post's Erik Rodriguez had a two-run single in the ninth.

David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and Dan Klusman (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) both had two hits for the Rams, who outhit the Eagles 11-7. Rupert House and Avots recorded to lead the Post offense.

Enzo Esposito lasted only four innings, surrendering five runs on five hits, and was tagged with the loss. Esposito struck out nine.

GAME TWO
Post broke a 3-all tie through six innings with single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth to open up a 6-3 lead. Don Walsh put the Eagles in the lead with a sacrifice fly. After Rafael Tous increased the lead to 5-3 with a two-out single in the eighth to cap a 3-for-4, four-RBI day, House had a ninth-inning RBI base hit.

Wells recorded his second home run of the day, a solo shot, in the last of the ninth.

Tous put the Eagles up 3-0 with a two-run double in the second and a RBI single in the ninth.

Philadelphia came back with three runs in the sixth to knot the score at three. Melendez brought the Rams within a run with a two-run double to left field to score Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) and Andres Valbuena (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy). Klusman followed the Melendez double with the game-tying sacrifice fly.

The Eagles' Nick Arnold went the first seven innings and gave up three runs on four hits to earn the win. Philadelphia's Jonathan Gottschall (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) also lasted seven innings, surrendering four runs on nine hits in a losing effort.

Philadelphia heads to Concordia (N.Y.) for a CACC doubleheader to close out the regular season on Monday, May 2 at 1 p.m. A win will lock the Rams into the CACC Tournament and a sweep gives the team a first-round home game.
