NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Philadelphia University's Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) was named as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball co-player of the week by the conference office Monday.
Garza was the star for the Rams in a 13-7 victory over Post on April 30 as he went 2-for-3 at the plate with two home runs—his seventh and eighth of the season—knocked in three runs and scored three times while throwing seven innings on the mound, allowing one unearned run on three hits. He recorded four strikeouts.
As a hitter, Garza is leading the CACC in batting average (.383), slugging percentage (.677), total bases (113), runs scored (45), and doubles (19). He is ranked second in hits (64) and third in home runs (8), runs batted in (42) and stolen bases (19).
In 11 pitching appearances, he is 3-3 with a 3.28 earned run average and 51 strikeouts in 57.2 innings. Garza is sitting ninth in the CACC in ERA.
Philadelphia (18-25, 9-9 CACC) heads to Concordia (N.Y.) for a crucial CACC doubleheader on Wednesday, May 4 at noon. A win puts the Rams in the playoffs and a sweep gives them a first-round home game.
