PHILADELPHIA – For the first time since 2008, the Philadelphia University baseball team will be headed to the round of 4 in the CACC Tournament. A day that started with rain and clouds ended with elation as the Rams took down Nyack 2-1 at Alumni Field.
As first pitch rolled around, the sun broke through the clouds and both teams came ready to play. Starting pitchers Casey O'Donnell and Erik Bussey took center stage, dueling for five innings as they kept hitters off-balance. The games first run came in the top of the 6th, when leadoff hitter John Kennedy scored on a sacrifice fly from Phil Erwin. O'Donnell pitched out of any further damage, leading to a 2-run bottom of the 6th for the Rams. After a leadoff single from senior Fernando Garza, junior Michael Melendez blasted a clutch 2-run homerun over the leftfield fence.
Those two runs were all O'Donnell needed as he pitched a scoreless 7th, 8th, and 9th inning, not allowing a hit or base runner for the last three innings.
The Rams will open up the round of 4 with Felician University on Thursday, May 12th in Wilmington, DE.
