BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Philadelphia University second baseman Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) and Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-East Region Team Wednesday. Garza was a first-team selection and Wells earned a place on the second team.
Garza and Wells are the Rams' first all-region players since Ken McCormick was named to the Daktronics Division II Baseball All-East Region second team in 2014.
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Year, Garza led the conference in batting average (.404), total bases (145), hits (80), runs scored (54), doubles (26), doubles per game (0.51), runs scored per game (1.06), slugging percentage (.732), and on-base percentage (.471), He was second in the CACC in home runs (11) and runs batted in (51), and third in stolen bases (20). In Division II, Garza is sitting seventh in doubles, 23rd in total bases, and 28th in slugging.
Garza—the program's first CACC player of the Year since 2010—hit .444 with four doubles, two home runs and five RBIs during the CACC Tournament. He recorded his 200th career hit—152nd at Philadelphia University—during the conference title game against Felician with a two-run home run in the eighth inning.
Wells—an All-CACC selection at first base—ranked inside the top-10 in the CACC in eight statistical categories. He led the conference with a career-high 12 home runs and was second with 33 walks and 51 RBIs. Wells was third in slugging percentage (.580), fifth in total bases (101), eighth in runs (35) and doubles (13), and 10th in on-base percentage (.421).
Philadelphia went 23-28 during the 2016 season, posting the most wins in a single season since 1995, and reached the championship game of the CACC Tournament for the first time in program history.
