PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia University first baseman Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) and utility player Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepskie, N.Y./Arlington) have received preseason recognition heading into the 2017 season.
Wells was named as a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Second Team All-American and a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason All-East Region second team selection. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper tabbed Quaranta as a preseason player to watch.
In 2016, Wells earned NCBWA All-East Region second team, American Baseball Coaches Association All-East Region second team, and All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) first team honors. He led the CACC with a career-high 12 home runs and was second with 33 walks and 51 RBIs. Wells—one of three Rams to play in all 51 games—was fourth in slugging percentage (.580), fifth in total bases (101), eighth in runs (35), and 10th in on-base percentage (.421) and doubles (13).
Quaranta posted a .333 batting average, 7 home runs, and knocked in 25 runs during his sophomore season. Despite playing in just 35 of the Rams' 51 games last season, Quaranta still finished fifth in the CACC in home runs and 16th in RBIs. Quaranta also was a member of the Philadelphia bullpen for the final season and went 2-0 with a 1.13 earned run average and two saves in 8.0 innings of work.
Philadelphia—who received votes in the 2017 NCBWA East Region Preseason Poll—opens the 2017 season against St. Thomas Aquinas in the Dinwiddie Challenge on Friday, Feb. 24 at 4:30 p.m.
