PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team scored 29 times on 27 hits as the Rams picked up a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victories over visiting Goldey-Beacom, 14-5 and 15-12, Wednesday afternoon on Alumni Field.
Michael Melendez (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) recorded five hits in nine at-bats and drove in seven runs, while Dan Klusman (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) was 5-for-9, scored four times, and added three RBI. Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) went 3-for-7 to extend his hitting streak to a season-high seven games.
The Rams fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning of game one, but bounced back with 10 straight runs to lead 10-1 after six.
Melendez—who went 3-for-5 with four RBI in the opener—was responsible for five of the Rams' runs as he gave Philadelphia the lead with a two-out, two-run single in the first, scored the third run on a double steal later in the same inning, and knocked in two more runs with a double to left in the sixth.
Nick Goetz (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) and Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) each had a RBI single during a three-run fourth, while Jeff Briggs (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) had a run-producing single in a two-run fifth.
After Goldey-Beacom (1-17, 1-7 CACC) got two runs back in the top of the seventh, Quaranta connected for a two-run home run—his 10th homer of the year—and Klusman hit a fielder's choice that produced two more runs in the bottom of the inning to increase the gap to 14-3.
Goetz, Quaranta, and Klusman all had two hits in the win.
Raul Perez-Duran led the Lightning, going 2-for-4, including a two-run home run in the ninth inning. Tevin Thomas and Geoff Stone also had two hits.
Jonathan Gottschall (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) threw a complete game to record his second win of the season. He posted three strikeouts, while allowing nine hits.
Philadelphia (7-12, 5-3 CACC) broke open the nightcap with five runs in the second and five more in the third to grab a 12-3 advantage.
Briggs led off the second inning with a home run, his first, to tie the game and then the Rams scored four runs with two outs to move ahead 7-3. David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) had a sacrifice fly, Melendez singled to left, Klusman tripled to center, and Matt McGee (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) recorded a base hit to left for the next four runs. During the five-run third, Melendez and McGee both had a RBI single to left and Andres Valbuena (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy) added a single to center to make the score 12-3.
The Lightning struck back with two runs in the fourth and a fifth-inning four-spot to cut the Ram lead to 12-9. Perez-Duran had a RBI single in each inning, while Edwin Lee produced a pair of sacrifice flies.
Philadelphia responded with three runs in the last of the fifth to regain a six-run lead, 15-9. McGee brought home the first run with a sacrifice bunt, and the final two runs on a Richard Joa infield bunt single and throwing error by Keegan Marsden.
Klusman led the Rams with three runs, while Wells, McTaggart, Melendez, and McGee recorded two hits.
Philadelphia used six pitchers in the game-two victory. Quaranta went the first two innings, allowing one hit, and striking out two to get the win.
