Wells, McTaggart named to NCBWA All-East Region Team; Wells tabbed player of the year

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Philadelphia University senior first baseman Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) was named the 2017 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Player of the Year to highlight the All-East Region Team that was announced on Wednesday. Senior utility player David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) earned a place on the second team.

Wells—a NCBWA All-East Region second-team selection as a junior—had a career-year in 2017 as he set career highs in batting average (.350), hits (57), runs scored (46), home runs (14), stolen bases (6), slugging percentage (.706) and on-base percentage (.465). He led the team in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, and runs scored.

The 2017 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Year, Wells ranked first in the conference in total bases (115) and slugging percentage; second in runs scored, home runs, and on-base percentage; fourth in walks; fifth in batting average; and sixth in hits, RBI (37), and doubles (12). He recorded a .360 batting average, five home runs, and 16 RBI against the CACC.

It is the second year in a row that the Rams have had an NCBWA first-team player. Fernando Garza earned a place on the first team in 2016.

An all-region player for the first time in his career, McTaggart had a breakout season as he posted a .306 batting average, 52 hits, 36 runs scored, 34 RBI, 10 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs, 16 walks, 9 stolen bases, a .370 on-base percentage, and a .512 slugging percentage—all career highs. McTaggart—an All-CACC first-team pick—finished the season fourth in triples, sixth in total bases, seventh in slugging and home runs, eighth in hits, and ninth in RBI.

Philadelphia concluded the 2017 season with a 19-29 overall record. The Rams reached the double-elimination portion of the CACC Tournament for the second year in a row.
