Rams Earn #6 Seed in Upcoming NCAA Division II Northeast Regional

The Philadelphia University men's basketball team was named the
#6 seed for the upcoming NCAA Division II Tournament. Head
Coach Herb Magee's squad, which brings a 22-11 overall record into
the Northeast Regional, will meet the third-seeded Golden Knights
from the College of Saint Rose (22-7) in an opening-round contest
at noon on Saturday, March 15th, on the campus of Bentley College
in Waltham, Mass.
The Rams earned the bid by winning the 2008 Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship, taking a 73-67
double-overtime decision from Holy Family University on Saturday,
March 8th. Sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram led the way for
Philadelphia University in the title game, finishing with 19
points, ten rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots while
senior forward Jason Hickenbottom added 14 points and nine rebounds
before fouling out.
The NCAA Tournament bid is the 23rd in Magee's illustrious coaching
career that has spanned 41 years and continues an amazing season
that saw his team open with an 0-5 record. The Rams posted a
perfect 16-0 record in the CACC during the regular season and
capped the conference campaign by winning the title. The
victory over the Tigers was the tenth straight win for the Rams and
the 16th in their past 17 games.
Magee's squad is led by Ingram, a CACC first-team All-Conference
selection in his first year as a starter. The Philadelphia
native leads the Rams in scoring and rebounding with 16.7 ppg and
8.4 rpg. Fellow sophomore Russell Frederick, the MVP of the
CACC Tournament and a third-team All-Conference pick, ranks third
on the team in scoring with a career-high 11.6 ppg while dishing
out a league-best 166 assists.
Hickenbottom, meanwhile, is a two-time CACC All-Conference honoree
and ranks second on the Rams in scoring this season with 13.0 ppg
while his 6.5 rpg also ranks second to Ingram. Rounding out
the All-Conference selections for Philadelphia University is junior
guard Mike Dunn, whose game-tying three-point field goal at the end
of regulation allowed the Rams to force overtime against Holy
Family, which earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament despite
the loss in the championship. A CACC honorable mention
All-Conference pick, Dunn ranks fourth on the team in scoring this
season with 10.9 ppg including a CACC-best 91 three-point field
goals.
Northeast-10 Champion Bentley (30-0) is the top-seed in the
Northeast Regional and will meet eighth-seed Merrimack (17-11) in
another opening round game. The other two first-round games will
feature fourth-seed LIU-C.W. Post (26-4) versus fifth-seed Bryant
(17-12) and second-seed Assumption (22-10) versus seventh-seed Holy
Family (21-9).
There will be eight Division II regional championship tournaments
played throughout the country next week with each winner earning
the right to play at the 2008 "Elite Eight" for the national
championship in Springfield, Mass. The national quarterfinal games
are set to get underway on Wednesday, March 26, 2008.
