PHILADELPHIA – In its final tune-up for the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship, the Philadelphia University men's golf team finished second in a tri-match against conference opponents Dominican (N.Y.) College and the University of the Sciences Monday afternoon at The ACE Club.
Led by top-five finishes from Peter Mahal (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) and Nicholas Nguyen (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), Philadelphia produced the runner-up score of 316 (+28). The Rams finished 16 strokes behind first place Dominican and 23 shots ahead of the University of the Sciences.
Mahal turned in his best round of the season, featuring five birdies, on Monday with a 74 (+2) to finish the day in a tie for second place. It was Mahal's fifth round in the 70s this year. Meanwhile, Nguyen shot in the 70s for the sixth time as he had four birdies with a 75 (+3) to finish deadlocked for fourth.
Jayson Gonzalez-Adams (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) birdied the par-5 ninth hole on his way to the ninth-place score of 81 (+9), his fourth best score of the season. Thomas Lucci (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) completed Philadelphia's team score as he carded an 86 (+14) to end the day in a tie for 13th. Austin Regan also competed for the Rams, finishing tied for 18th with an 89 (+17).
Jacob Williams (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley), Nick Geracimos (Chesapeake City, Md./Bohemia Manor), and Kyle Zeller (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) took part in the event as individuals. Williams shot his second-best round of the season with an 84 (+12) to finish in a tie for 11th. Geracimos was tied for 15th after carding at 87 (+15), his best score this year. Zeller ended up in a tie with Regan for 18th place after shooting at 89 (+17).
Dominican's Hunter Wescott shot a three-under 69 to finish in first place.
The CACC Championship will be held on April 25-26 at the Back Creek Golf Club in Middletown, Del.
