MIDDLETOWN, Del. – The Philadelphia University men's golf team concluded its 2017 season with an eighth place finish at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship, which wrapped up action Wednesday at the par-71 Back Creek Golf Course.
Playing in much drier conditions than 24 hours earlier, Philadelphia shot 322 (+38)—a 33-stroke improvement over Tuesday's score of 355. The Rams ended the two-day tournament with a score of 677 (+109).
For the second straight day, Peter Mahal (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) had Philadelphia's best round with a 78 (+7). Mahal had a strong back nine, birdieing the pat-3 14th and scoring par of six holes. He finished the tournament in a tie for 26th with a score of 161 (+19)
Nicholas Nguyen (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and Jayson Gonzalez-Adams (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) both carded a 79 (+8) on the second day of the tournament. Nguyen's round included birdies on the 11th and 18th holes, while Gonzalez-Adams recorded a birdie on the 11th hole. Nguyen ended up in 34th place with a score of 167 (+25). Gonzalez-Adams' score of 170 (+28) landed him in a tie for 36th.
Thomas Lucci (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) also birdied the 11th hole on his way to a final day score of 86 (+15). He was Philadelphia's final scorer as he completed the tournament with the 42nd-place score of 179 (+37).
Nick Geracimos (Chesapeake City, Md./Bohemia Manor) ended the event with the 45th-place score of 198 (+56) after a second-day score of 94 (+23).
Host Wilmington (Del.) University turned in a score of 290 (+12), Wednesday's best score, to win the team championship by three strokes over Dominican (N.Y.) College. The Wildcats' score was 608 (+40), while the Chargers had a score of 611 (+43). Nyack's Elliot Wakefield was the individual champion with a two-day score of 148 (+7).
