WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Philadelphia University men's soccer team opened its 2016 season with a 3-0 loss to host West Chester University in a non-conference clash Thursday afternoon on Rockwell Field.
After almost 18 minutes of defensive soccer, the Rams (0-1-0) began to create numerous chances, resulting in four corner kicks and one shot at the Golden Ram (1-0-0) net over a 4-minute span.
Then, against the run of play, West Chester broke the scoreless deadlock on a Jason Pixley goal at the 27:39 mark with an assist going to Nicholas Meola.
The primarily defensive first half ended with the Golden Rams ahead 1-0. West Chester attempted just three shots—all on target—while Philadelphia got one of its two attempts on goal.
Matt Canis increased the West Chester lead to 2-0 with 14:07 left in the contest after receiving a pass from Tyler Rapposelli. Miguel Ross closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 87:48.
Ben Sauer (Bel Air, Md./Perry Hall Christian) stopped six shots, four in the second half, for Philadelphia. James Wood earned the shutout, making three saves.
