Men’s soccer falls in overtime to Caldwell

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's soccer team was defeated by Caldwell University, 2-1 in double overtime, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener for both teams Saturday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.

The Cougars' Italo Cardoso scored the match-winning goal 1:16 into the second overtime session on a centering pass from Erik Molin. Molin lofted his centering pass from the left wing into the box. The pass was able to bounce once in the box and found the right foot of Cardoso, who volleyed the ball into the goal. The goal is Cardoso's first of the season.

After a scoreless opening half, Caldwell (2-2-0, 1-0-0 CACC) got on the scoreboard as Tom Yorston beat Philadelphia keeper Eric Gutierrez (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) on a breakaway with just 2:47 gone by in the second half. Yorston was set free thanks to a through ball along the right sideline from Darren Appanah.

Philadelphia (0-2-1, 0-1-0 CACC) got the equalizer at the 72:28 mark on a Seiji Rose (Toulouse, France/Lycee Climatique et Sportif Pierre de Coubertin) free kick. Rose's shot, from the top of the penalty arc, was shot low and past the Cougar wall of defenders and into the lower right corner of the goal. Ian Davies (Upper Darby, Pa./Westtown School) set up the free kick as he forced his defender to take him down before he was able to go 1-v-1 with the keeper.

Rashaun Robe (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) nearly came through with the go-ahead goal for Philadelphia nine minutes later. Robe found space from 25 yards out and took a shot at the Caldwell net. With the ball hooking towards the left post, Cougar keeper Fritz Meister came through with a leaping save to his right to keep the game knotted at one.

In the opening overtime session, Philadelphia took all three shots, getting two on goal.

Meister finished the match with seven saves, while Gutierrez made four stops.

Philadelphia owned a 17-16 shot advantage.

The Rams head to Georgian Court for a CACC match on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 3:30 p.m.
