Softball Announces Three Recruits Commit in Early Period
Philadelphia, PA- Philadelphia University Head Softball Coach John Kelly has announced his most recent recruiting class, signing three recruits in the early signing period for the 2010-2011 season.
The three incoming freshman geographically represent the tri-state area: pitcher Ally Vrcek (Murrysville, PA/ Franklin Regional), outfielder Devin Griglik (Rockaway, NJ/ Morris Catholic) and utility player Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley).
"We're happy to welcome Ally, Devin and Meaghan to the PhilaU family. I fully expect these young women to help the program reach the next level both locally and nationally," said Coach Kelly.
Vrcek- the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's 2009 ‘Player of the Year', was also a 1st Team All-State selection as a junior. She led her Franklin Regional team to a Class AAA Championship in ‘09, carrying a 17-1 record through the season. She pitched 116 innings and allowed just six earned runs- boasting a 0.36 ERA. She also tallied 205 strikeouts on the year and hit .328 with three homers.
Griglik, who plans to major in graphic design at PhilaU, was a Star Ledger All-State selection twice. In her junior season (2009), she helped Morris Catholic to a Colonial Hills Conference championship- batting a county-high .555 with 50 hits and 16 stolen bases. She also tallied All-CHC, All-County and All-Area accolades two years in a row.
An upstate New Yorker, Lewis was an All-State Section IV selection as a junior in 2009 at second base. She helped her Chenango Valley squad to a NYSPHAA Class B Semifinal game, after clinching the STAC and Section IV championships. As a junior, she hit .467 entering the playoffs.
The PhilaU Lady Rams begin action in less than two months, with a season-opening 2 p.m. doubleheader at West Chester University to kick off the 2010 season.
