PHILADELPHIA – Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Reg.) hit her first collegiate home run as part of a four-run second inning to propel the Philadelphia University softball team to a 6-3 win in game two of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against visiting Bloomfield on Saturday. The Rams split the twinbill as the Bears won the opener 10-2 in five innings.
Philadelphia (6-19-1, 4-9 CACC) headed into the bottom of the second down 1-0, but would put together a two-out rally that would prove to be the difference in the game.
With Gianna Bliss (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) on second after a one-out double, Katy Sullivan (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) smacked a double down the left field line to score Bliss and knot the game at one. Erica D'Angelo (Broomall, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) followed up the two-base hit with a single back through the box, plating Sullivan and putting the Rams in the lead. Then, Stas got a hold of a Gabby Citriniti and put it over the left-center field fence to drive in two to extend the margin to 4-1.
After the Bears (14-13, 8-6 CACC) got one back on a third-inning Jamie Cook double, the Rams widen the gap to 6-2 with two more runs in the bottom of the frame on one-out singles by Bliss and Mariah Hans (Barrington, N.J./Haddon Heights).
Bloomfield pushed one run across in the seventh on a one-out double by Mariah Frazier.
Philadelphia pounded out 10 hits in the victory, making the team 2-0 when its recorded double-digits hits. Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Reg.), Stas, Bliss, and Hans all had two hits.
Cook had three of the Bears' 11 hits.
In her first appearance in the pitching circle of the season, Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) picked up the win, going 4.2 innings, striking out one, and allowing just two runs on seven hits. Citriniti took the loss.
Bloomfield jumped out to a 6-0 lead with one run in the first and five more in the top of the third. In the five-run fifth, the Bears scored four times with two outs, including a two-run double by Paige Lafferty.
The Rams fought back during their turn in the third, scoring on a Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) single and a Pepper double, both with two away, to trim their deficit to 6-2. Stas—who singled with one out—scored on Burrell's hit and Burrell came around on the Pepper double.
In the fourth, Bloomfield scored on back-to-back two-out base hits from Greta Coleman and Paige Lafferty to reclaim the six-run advantage (8-2). The Bears scored on a Cook fielder's choice and a wild pitch in the fifth to push the gap to eight.
Led by three hits from Lauren Bueno and two each from Kirsten Wilson, Faith Apolskis, and Lafferty, Bloomfield outhit Philadelphia 13-6. Pepper recorded two hits in two at-bats to lead the Ram offense.
Wilson went the first three innings, scattered six hits, and fanned three to get the win. Stas struck out one in three innings and suffered the loss.
