Softball upended twice by Wilmington (Del.)

PHILADELPHIA – Erica D'Angelo (Broomall, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) both recorded three hits for the Philadelphia University softball team in a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) setbacks, 13-5 and 3-1, to visiting Wilmington (Del.) University Wednesday afternoon.

GAME ONE
The Wildcats (18-14, 13-1 CACC) broke open a 4-3 contest through four with a single run in the fifth and four more an inning later to take a 9-3 lead. Shannon Brantley scored Wilmington's fifth inning run on a throwing error after reaching base with a leadoff double. In the sixth, Danielle Bradley connected for a two-out grand slam to increase the gap to six.

Philadelphia (6-22-1, 4-12 CACC) got a run back in the last of the sixth when Gianna Bliss (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) scored from third on a Brooklyn Lachette wild pitch.

Wilmington pushed an additional four runs across the plate with no outs in the seventh. Jazmeen Llamas had a RBI fielder's choice, and Meghan Brown and Bradley each recorded RBI singles.

D'Angelo capped off a 2-for-4 game by hitting her first collegiate home run, a solo shot to left, in the seventh to make the score 13-5.

Wilmington scored three times in the first inning to take a quick 3-0 lead. After swapping single runs, Philadelphia scored twice in the fourth to close within 4-3. Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) had a RBI double, while Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) recorded a sacrifice fly during the fourth.

Colby Wyatt, Brown, and Bradley all contributed three hits for Wilmington, who had 14 in the game. Philadelphia got two hits apiece from Levins, D'Angelo, and Burrell.

Lachette earned the victory after giving up just two runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief. Troisi suffered the loss, striking out two in four innings.

GAME TWO
The nightcap was a pitching duel between Wilmington's Lachette and Caitlyn Whiteside and Philadelphia's Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional).

Lachette went the first three innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and striking out one. Whiteside, who picked up the win, took over in the fourth and recorded three strikeouts and gave up two hits in four scoreless innings.

Pepper fanned seven batters, while scattering seven hits in a complete-game loss. Two of the three runs she allowed were earned.

Brown broke a scoreless tie with a third inning one-out single to plate Taylor Rizzotte, who led off with an infield hit.

An inning later, Philadelphia came back to tie the score at one on a fielding error. Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) hit a ground ball that bounced off of the Wildcats' Jazmeen Llamas, bringing Levins home from third.

Wilmington reclaimed the lead on a Wyatt sixth-inning double that plated Brantley. The Wildcats tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on a one-out throwing error.

Philadelphia heads to Dominican (N.Y.) for a CACC twinbill on Saturday, April 9 at noon.
