CLERMONT, Fla. – The Philadelphia University softball team opened its six-day, nine-game trip to Florida with a 2-0 loss to American International College Saturday afternoon.
American International (2-2) broke a scoreless deadlock with a two-out double in the fourth inning off the bat of Sarah Baganz. Kayla Riley scored the opening run after doubling to start the inning and going to third on a Kristin Steele sacrifice bunt.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Yami Lopez grounded out to third base allowing Keymell Cartwright to sprint home for the second run of the game.
After getting just one hit in the first six innings, a Breck Urban (Mullica Hill, N.J./Paul VI) double in the fourth, Philadelphia (0-3) attempted to rally during its final at-bat. With one out in the inning, Megan Letos (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson), Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional), and Emily Williams (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) strung together three straight singles to load the bases. However, the rally would come up short as Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) and Katelyn Stys (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol) both hit infield pop-ups to end the game.
Pepper gave the Rams five strong innings in the pitching circle, striking out seven while allowing just one run on five hits. For American International, Sarah Believeau gave up just one hit in 5.2 innings and struck out four. Jillian Bedard went the final 1.1 innings to record the save.
Philadelphia is back in action on Sunday, March 12 against the University of Indianapolis at 3:30 p.m. and St. Cloud State at 6 p.m.
