Stas’ arm leads softball to split in CACC opener at Wilmington (Del.)

NEW CASTLE, Del. – Led by a tremendous performance in the pitching circle by Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional), the Philadelphia University softball team defeated Wilmington (Del.) 1-0 in the backend of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opening doubleheader Tuesday afternoon on Asbury Field. The Wildcats took the opening game 2-0.

Philadelphia (4-9, 1-1 CACC) manufactured the only run it would need in game two during the second inning. Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) started the rally by working a one-out walk. Emily Williams (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) stepped up in the next at bat and beat out a bunt single—one of four hits the Rams would get. Both runners advanced into scoring positon after Kayla Henry-Caltabellotta (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) laid down a sacrifice bunt. Wensel would score the winning run on a wild pitch.

Stas made that run stand up as she surrendered just three hits and didn't walk a batter in a complete-game victory (2-2). She faced just four hitters over the minimum and retired 15 of the final 16 batters.

The Wildcats attempt to put together a threat with two away in the first inning. Danielle Bradley doubled and made her way to third on a fielding error on a ball hit by Brooklyn Lachette. Stas got out of danger, inducing an inning-ending Becca Stanley ground out.

Breck Urban (Mullica Hill, N.J./Paul VI), LilyAnn Yoakum (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock), and Stas each added a hit for the Rams.

Despite giving up just the one run on four hits, Bradley took the loss.

In the first game, Rosa'Lynn Burton scored both of the Wilmington (11-6, 1-1 CACC) runs, one in the first and the other in the third. Burton recorded the first-inning run on an Alyssa Velasquez sacrifice bunt. She started the frame off with a double and stole third base. Two innings later, Burton swiped third and came home on an overthrow.

The Rams had three hits off of Wildcat starter Caitlyn Whiteside, who fanned seven to earn the complete-game victory. Urban had two hits—a single in the fourth and sixth innings. Stas led off the game with a double.

Stephanie Pepper gave up just four hits and recorded a strikeout for the Rams.

Philadelphia will play its first home doubleheader of the season when Molloy comes to campus on Friday, March 24 at 2:30 p.m.
