Softball takes two from Goldey-Beacom

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team has run off five straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victories after sweeping Goldey-Beacom, 6-1 and 1-0, Wednesday afternoon.

Philadelphia has claimed wins in seven of its last nine games and improves to 10-11 overall, 5-1 against the CACC. Goldey-Beacom is now 4-12 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The Rams broke a scoreless deadlock in game one with a three-run third inning. Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) got the Rams on the board with a perfect bunt single placed between the pitcher and catcher. Alyssa Giampolo attempted to throw one, but Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area)—who started the rally with a single—beat the throw. Two batters later, Breck Urban (Mullica Hill, N.J./Paul VI) ripped a single to right to plate Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson)—who got on base with a double—and Stas to increase the lead.

After the teams traded single runs in the fourth, Philadelphia widened the gap to 6-1 with a pair of fifth inning two-out base hits. Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) legged out an infield single to third base to bring home Urban, who led off the frame with a double, for the Rams' fifth run. Levins was responsible for the final run with a double to deep left center.

In the pitching circle, Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) tied her career-high of 13 strikeouts, while allowing five hits, to earn her fourth win of the season.

Philadelphia had nine hits in the opener, two each from Levins, Urban, and Wensel.

Giampolo had two hits at the plate and recorded one strikeout in the circle for Goldey-Beacom. Kasey Goshorn brought in the Lightning run with a bases-loaded walk.

Game two was a pitching duel between Stas and Kylie Doyle. Stas surrendered three hits over seven innings and allowed just one Lightning player to reach second base. She also posted eight strikeouts. Doyle threw a complete-game one-hitter, which included three strikeouts, for the Lightning. Neither pitcher walked a batter.

Defense decided the game as Goldey-Beacom committed two costly errors in the sixth inning that allowed Philadelphia to score the game's only run.

The sixth inning started with Kayla Henry-Caltabellotta (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) laying down a bunt and ending up at second on an errant throw from Doyle. With two outs and Henry-Caltabellotta on third, Madison Heno (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) hit a ground ball to third baseman Rachel Davis. She fielded the ball cleanly, but the throw—that would have ended the inning—was wide. Heno ended up being safe at first and Henry-Caltabellota scored.

Jovanna Alfonsi (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) recorded Philadelphia's lone hit, a leadoff single in the third.

Philadelphia continues CACC play with a trip to Felician on Saturday, April 1 at 3 p.m.
