Softball swept by St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-0 and 7-3, Saturday afternoon on Spartan Field.

In the opening contest, the Rams got just three hits off of Spartan starter Julie Sosnicki. Megan Letos (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) and Gianna Bliss (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) singled in the third and sixth, respectively, and Kayla Henry-Caltabellotta (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) hit in double in the seventh inning.

St. Thomas Aquinas did all of its scoring in the first three innings. The Spartans scored twice in the first on a Kelcy McGeehan sacrifice bunt and a Danielle DiModugno solo home run. McGeehan struck again one inning later with a two-run double to increase the lead to 4-0. Ashley Landolina tacked on the Spartans' fifth run with a RBI double in the third.

Sosnicki struck out two in the complete-game victory. Katelyn Stas (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol) threw the first three innings for the Rams. Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) came on in the fourth and gave Philadelphia three scoreless innings of relief, striking out four.

The Rams (15-20) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings of play in game two. Philadelphia had six of its game total nine hits over the first two frames.

In the first inning, Philadelphia got back-to-back RBI base hits from Jovanna Alfonsi (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) and Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic). Stas scored the first run on Alfonsi's single and Wensel knocked in Bliss.

Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) increased the lead to 3-0 when she delivered a two-out single in the second inning to send home Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), who singled earlier in the inning.

The Spartans trimmed the Rams advantage to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on Alyssa Chelak and Valerie Winalski RBI singles.

The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth when St. Thomas Aquinas plated five runs to take a 7-3 lead. Chelak tied the game with a RBI fielder's choice and Briana Keaveney put St. Thomas Aquinas the lead with a RBI single. The Spartans padded their lead by drawing three bases-loaded walks.

Levins, Alfonsi, and Weaver all had two hits for Philadelphia. Winalski recorded two of the Spartans' five hits.

Colleen Borum was the winning pitcher. Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) took the loss in relief despite eight strikeouts over five innings.
