PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team (8-1, 2-0 CACC) outlasted the Chestnut Hill Griffins (4-4, 1-1 CACC) in overtime on Tuesday evening from the Gallagher Center on Military Appreciation Night by a final of 81-71.
Redshirt freshman Caitlyn Cunningham scored a game-high 24 points off the bench with seven rebounds.
Redshirt junior Jessica Kaminski notched a double-double in the win behind 15 points and 13 boards.
Redshirt sophomore Ayoola Oguntuase also scored 15 points on the evening.
Jefferson trailed by four at the end of the first half, 31-27. Chestnut Hill extended the lead up to 10 early in the third quarter.
The Rams were able to get the deficit down to one after a three-pointer by Erin Maher with 4:46 left in the third before Oguntuase gave Jefferson the lead on the next possession with a layup, 44-43. The two teams were tied 50-50 at the end of the third.
Jefferson owned a three-point lead with 25 seconds left in regulation after a pair of free throws from Alynna Williams, 67-64.
The Griffins cut it down to one with 11 seconds to play and then forced a Jefferson turnover to get the ball back. A dribble drive led to a foul and two free throws for Chestnut Hill. After missing the front end, the Griffins tied it up at 67-67 after hitting the second to send the game into overtime.
Jefferson dominated the five-minute, overtime period, outscoring Chestnut Hill, 14-4. Cunningham scored eight of the 14 for the Rams. Jefferson took its largest lead of the game with 20 seconds left in overtime at 81-70 before the affair went final at 81-71.
Jefferson Women's Basketball returns to action on the road at Holy Family on Saturday, Dec. 9 at noon.
