Woodland Leads Six Student-Athletes as Academic All-Area Selections

Senior Brooke Woodland was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year on Sunday, in voting done by area Sports Information Directors.  Woodland, who was recognized for her stellar season both on the field and in the classroom, was one of six Philadelphia University student-athletes named to the various Academic All-Area teams.

A product of nearby Avon Grove High, Woodland was a four-year starter for the Lady Rams, posting 108 points in her career.  She finished with 77 goals and 31 assists for the Lady Rams and was a IWLCA/US Lacrosse second-team All-North Region selection as a sophomore.  She also helped Philadelphia University to the 2007 ECAC Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship, the first-ever postseason title for the program.

In addition to Woodland, baseball siblings Zach and Tyler Mentzer, women's tennis standout Maddie Smith, Anders Novesky of the men's tennis team and softball record-holder Jacque Curtis were also recognized for their accomplishments this past season.

Both Zach and Tyler Mentzer earned Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) first-team All-Conference accolades for the Rams this past spring, helping the team to a 22-22 overall record and a share of the CACC regular-season championship.  Smith, meanwhile, concluded her record-setting career for the Lady Rams by setting a new school mark with 146 career combined victories, earning CACC Player of the Year honors in addition to helping Head Coach Marty Gilbert's team to the NCAA Division II Tournament.  Novesky ranked third on the Rams with 22 combined victories this past spring and was instrumental in helping the men's tennis team to the NCAA Division II Tournament -- the first-ever for the program.  A two-time CACC All-Conference selection, Curtis set numerous Lady Rams' records in her four years including career homeruns and career RBI at the plate while also ranking in the top five all-time in school history in pitching victories, pitching strikeouts and innings pitched.
