PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's rowing team's spring season is off to a solid start after strong showings at the Murphy Cup on Saturday on the banks of the Schuylkill River.
The women's varsity eight team carried the day as it earned first place in the DII/DIII event.
The team opened its event by using its lane four position in heat one to power its way to a heat-winning team of 7:02.12, the top time in the heat round. Philadelphia won its heat race by 6.96 seconds over second-place Bates.
The varsity eight team came back in the afternoon for the grand final, once again in lane four by virtue of owning the best heat time. Philadelphia nearly backed up its time from the heat round after completing the course in a victorious time of 7:04.49. The Rams dominated the race and claimed victory by 8.19 seconds.
Philadelphia also enjoyed success in the novice four race. In the heat round, the Rams raced their way into the final with a third-place time of 8:39.26. In the final, Philadelphia posted a time of 9:07.51 to take sixth place.
In the women's varsity four event, Philadelphia came in fourth place with a time of 8:16.31.
Philadelphia returns to the water on Saturday, April 2 to compete against La Salle and Washington College at the Hines Rowing Center at 10 a.m.
