Women's rowing takes part in day one of the  Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's rowing team took to the Schuylkill River for the 2016 Aberdeen/Dad Vail Regatta on a rainy Friday.

In the Varsity Four Division II race—the very first race of the day—Philadelphia took fourth place in its heat with a 2-kilometer time of 8 minutes, 31.572 seconds. The Rams' varsity four boat consisted of Kaitlin Johnson (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School), Sarah Nellis (Media, Pa./Penncrest, Laina Healy (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Carley Pawliski (Monclova, Ohio/Anthony Wayne), and coxswain Avelina Gargano (Broomall, Pa./Country Day School of the Sacred Heart).

Barry won the heat with a 7:39.329, the best time of the event.

The fourth-place finish means the Rams will compete in a repechage race on Saturday, May 14 at 8:12 a.m. Joining Philadelphia in the race are Florida Tech, Central Oklahoma, Humboldt State, Mercyhurst, and UC San Diego. The top four finishers advance to the final—along with heat winners Barry and Nova Southeastern.

Philadelphia's Varsity Eight competed in a pair of races on Friday. The team—made up of Alexandra Williams (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Maria Soledad Romero Gonzalez (Malaga, Spain/La Asuncion), Ahna Huss (Shenandoah, Va./Shenandoah Valley), Caitlin Powell (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood), Amy Robinson (Barrington, N.J./Gloucester Catholic), Rachel Tobinus (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Kelsey Fairley (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), Kelsey Zuch (North Towanda, N.Y./North Towanda), and coxswain Lynn Nemeth (Flourtown, Pa./Germantown Academy)—started the day with a heat-race time of 7:31.625 to finish in fourth and go into the repechage race. Central Oklahoma posted the heat-winning time of 6:54.634.

In the repechage, the Varsity Eight, rowing out of lane six, was sixth with a 7:38.811 to complete its Dad Vails.
