PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's soccer team is in the win column for the first time this season as forward Alex Reyes (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) scored in the 18th minute to give the Rams a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over visiting Caldwell University Saturday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.
Reyes—who has scored for the third straight match—had her goal set up by a strong run along down the left wing by midfielder Helen Finke (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East). Finke got a step on her defender and turned into the penalty area. Then, she took a shot at goal, which required a diving save by keeper Kylie Whalen.
Whalen was able to control the shot and left a rebound, which Reyes slammed into the open net for the goal.
The Rams (1-1-1, 1-0-1 CACC) were the dominant team in the second half, outshooting the Cougars (0-3-1, 0-1-0 CACC) 10-2 over the final 45 minutes. Brooke Haden (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) nearly gave Philadelphia an insurance goal late in the contest, but had her attempt from 25 yards out in the 88th minute hit the crossbar.
Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) was solid in goal as she made five saves, all in the first half, to record her first shutout as a Ram. Whalen finished the match with eight stops for Caldwell.
The Rams outshot the Cougars, 20-10.
Philadelphia heads to Georgian Court for a CACC contest on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 3:30 p.m.
