Women’s Soccer Suffers 3-1 Loss to Georgian Court

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's soccer team (3-3-0, 2-1-0 CACC) suffered a 3-1 conference loss to the Georgian Court Lions (4-3-1, 3-0-0 CACC) on Wednesday afternoon from Ravenhill Field.

Three-first half goals by the Lions proved too large of a deficient for the Rams to overcome in the midweek matchup.

Georgian Court's Anissia Fucci started the scoring for the Lions in the 8th minute after she played a pass from teammate Kaitlin Lister from close range, 1-0.

The Lions extended their lead in the 22nd minute when Rosa Franze made a short pass to Dana Fontana, who took a shot at the top of the box for a goal, 2-0.

Jefferson responded when sophomore MaryKate Ulmer scored an unassisted goal in the 34th minute. Ulmer dribbled through the Lion defenders with only the keeper to beat. The sophomore took her shot before she tripped over the GCU keeper, tumbling as the ball hit the back of the net, 2-1. The goal came as the fourth of Ulmer's career after she scored three as a freshman in 2016.

But the Lions were able to regain their two-goal advantage when GCU was awarded a penalty shot on a Jefferson handball in the box in the 42nd minute. Lizzy Krune converted the opportunity for Georgian Court, 3-1.

Jefferson had offensive chances in the second half though the score did not change. With 19 minutes remaining in the contest, sophomore Alexa Karakitsos played a through ball to freshman Sarah Patrignani into the box. Though Patrignani was pushed towards the left side of the box, she got a shot off that went just right of the goal.

Jefferson led shots 8-4 in the final 45 minutes though Georgian Court led overall shots, 13-11, after nine in the first half.

Junior keeper Erin Tinneny made three saves in the loss, facing a total of four shots on target.
