Women's volleyball sweeps Holy Family, 3-0

PHILADELPHIA – Outside hitter Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) recorded 11 kills and 19 digs to lead the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-22) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) sweep of visiting Holy Family Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.

With the victory, Philadelphia picked up its 11th win over the last 12 matches as it improves to 15-4 overall and 8-1 in the CACC. Holy Family dips to 8-11 overall, 5-4 in conference play.

Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) added eight kills, while Mariah Cadzow (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) had seven kills, 14 digs, and two service aces. Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md./Huntingtown) contributed 33 assists.

The match was decided by attack errors. Philadelphia committed just nine attack errors and had a .250 attack percentage, while Holy Family racked up 26 errors and hit just .071. The Rams also outblocked the Tigers, 7-2.

The opening set featured 11 ties and two lead changes as both teams recorded a .237 attack percentage. The score was knotted at 15 when Wensel recorded one her three set-one kills to spark a 7-3 run to put Philadelphia in front 22-18. Wensel and Cadzow both had two kills during the surge.

Philadelphia's offense exploded in the second set with the Rams notched 11 kills and just one error to hit .345, while Holy Family struggled as the Tigers had 11 errors and hit -.105. The Rams trailed 3-2, but quickly put the set away with a 21-5 outburst—that featured three kills each from Justus and Wensel—to take a 23-8 advantage.

The third set came down to attack errors as Holy Family had 10 and Philadelphia recorded just four. Philadelphia rattled off seven straight points, six on Holy Family errors, to open up a 7-2 lead. Holy Family was able to trim the gap to one multiple times, but Philadelphia wouldn't lead go of the lead.

Chase Wassel led the Tigers with 16 kills and 12 digs.

Philadelphia welcomes Chestnut Hill to the Gallagher Center for a CACC showdown on Friday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
