Second-Set Comeback Highlights Volleyball’s Win Over Goldey-Beacom

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team (8-5, 3-0 CACC) took down the Goldey-Beacom Lightning (2-9, 1-2 CACC) by a final of 25-19, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19 on Friday evening from the Gallagher Center.

The match was highlighted by an intense 10-point run late in the second set by the Rams after they trailed by eight. The win comes as the fifth-straight for the squad.

The Rams took the opening set, 25-19. Sophomore Mariah Cadzow led the squad with six kills while hitting .545 on 11 total attacks with no errors. The Lightning hung tough with the Rams, keeping the set close. Jefferson led by as many as six at 19-13 though Goldey-Beacom would get back within four.

Jefferson trailed for a majority of the second set, at most by eight points at 23-15. But a 10-point comeback pushed the Rams ahead to eventually cap the second set. The run featured two service aces by Cadzow including one that tied it up, 23-23, before a Goldey-Beacom attack error and the set point on a kill by senior Corinne Justus.

The Lightning jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set before the Rams tied it up at 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8. After a Jefferson timeout, Goldey-Beacom extended their lead up to eight at 19-11 in part to a six-point run. The Rams battled back to get within two at 20-18 but could not repeat the second-set magic as the Lightning took the third, 25-18.

The Rams led 6-1 early in the fourth before the Lightning were able to even it up at 15-15. The teams traded points before Jefferson tied it up 19-19 taking the lead at 20-19. The match ended with a seven-point run by the Rams.

QUICK KILLS
Cadzow led the squad with a match-high 15 kills and .325 hitting percentage.

WENSEL WATCH
After her eighth double-double of the season behind 12 kills and 12 digs in tonight's match, Wensel needs only 14 kills and 7 digs to reach the 1000-plateau mark in both categories for her career.

The volleyball team returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 23 in Orangeburg, N.Y. with the Dominican Chargers at noon.
