DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's cross country team placed second at the nine-team DelVal Invitational to begin the 2017 fall campaign. The 5,000-meter race was hosted by Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pa. on Saturday morning.
Senior Sarah Nellis (Media, Pa. / Penncrest) led the Rams individually with a sixth-place finish across 92 competitors. She crossed the finish at 20:54.2 for a 6:44 pace.
Freshman Jasmine Buckridge (Hamilton, Ontario / Westdale Secondary) finished closely behind in her collegiate debut for ninth overall, coming in with a time of 21:00.6 for a 6:46 pace.
To round out the top-five finisher for Jefferson, a trio of Rams came in 17th, 19th and 20th place to help secure the second-place team finish.
Sophomore Erin Young (Huntingdon Valley, Pa. / Archbishop Wood) finished first of the three at 21:20.8 for a 6:53 pace. Following behind were freshman Kali Safer (Egg Harbor City, N.J. / Egg Harbor City) and sophomore Nicole Stough (York, Pa. / West York) with respective times of 21:34.4 (6:57 pace) and 21:38.0 (6:58 pace).
Messiah took first place at the meet followed by Jefferson, King's (Pa.), DeSales, Delaware Valley, Mercer County C.C., Gwynedd-Mercy, PSU-Berks and Albright.
The women return to action next Saturday, Sept. 9 as they host the Philadelphia Metropolitan Championships from the Belmont Plateau at 12:15 p.m.
