PHILADELPHIA – Senior Sarah Nellis of the Jefferson women's cross country team narrowly missed out on first place at the 2017 Philadelphia Metropolitan Championship at the Belmont Plateau this afternoon in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park but the Rams were still able to grab first place in the event for the 10th-straight year.
Nellis finished with a time of 20:42.4 (5:33.2 pace) for a second-place finish individually at the event. She led with less than 100 meters but was passed by Caldwell's Victoria Thaler (20:41.4) at the late second.
Sophomore Erin Young placed second for the Rams with a time of 20:45.4 with a mile pace of 5:34.0. Her time was good for fourth overall.
Freshman Jasmine Buckridge, who was last week's CACC Rookie Runner of the Week, was the third Ram to cross the finish line at 21:08.2 (5:40.1 pace) for seven place individually.
Senior Maddie Conway, freshman Kali Safer and sophomore Nicole Stough grabbed 9th, 10th and 11th place individually at the event coming in with times of 21:18.5 (5:42.9 pace), 21:22.4 (5:43.9 pace) and 21:30.0 (5:46.0 pace), respectively, to round out the top Jefferson finishers.
The Rams run on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek Park in Newark, Del. next weekend.
